The prediction of adjustment at age 7 from activity level at age 5.

Observed 192 children when they were 5 yrs old in school playgroups and at home. Ss were rated on activity level (AL) by their parents on M. K. Rothbart’s (1989) Child Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ). At age 7 yrs, 118 of the Ss were administered S. Harter and R. Pike’s (see PA, Vol. 72:13558) Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and an achievement task, and parents filled out the Child Behavior Checklist, the CBQ, and the Conners Parent Rating Scale (C. H. Goyette et al, 1978). Home observations of AL were significantly related to parent ratings of AL, but not to school observations. AL at age 5 yrs was related to parents’ ratings of aggression and hyperactivity and to girls’ learning problems at age 7 yrs. A was unrelated to the children’s self-perceived cognitive competence, but mothers’ rating of high AL at age 5 yrs was related to low reading comprehension at age 7 yrs.
