The focus of this article is on the development of understanding about sex and gender from infants’ earliest recognition of sex-related differences through the acquisition of gender knowledge and sex-typed behavior in early childhood.Conviction that environmetnal influences are often more subtle and more powerful than has been asserted, and that the child’s gender understanding is more complex and less concrete . The environmental influences discussed are family, peers, and teachers/caregivers.
