Based on Research Conducted at OSLC
A nationwide study of important developments in understanding the relationship between heredity and family environment in child physical growth and health.
Project Overview
The Early Growth and Development Study – Health (EGDS-Health) was a longitudinal prospective study involving 561 sets of children and adoptive parents from EGDS-Phase I and Phase II. EGDS-Health extended the work of the previous EGDS projects by exploring child physical growth and health. We focused on the eating habits and behaviors of 561 sets of children, adoptive parents, and of birth parents, examining family dietary habits, food preferences, physical activities, and child growth patterns from birth to middle childhood. We were particularly interested in identifying the environmental and genetic factors that promote physical growth and healthy weight over time.
EGDS-Health was funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Each birth parent was asked to complete a series of questionnaires during a phone interview. Each adoptive parent was interviewed at child age 7–9 years, completed a series of online questionnaires, and participated in three short phone interviews focused on child diet and activities over the prior 24-hour period.
