EUGENE, Or. – OSLC Research Scientist Dr. Charles R. Martinez, Jr. received a $3.3 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) today to support a five-year study of the preventive impact of culturally specific parent management training on Latino middle school youth in Oregon. While numerous prevention efforts around the country have targeted parenting practices in non-minority families, few intervention models have been tested that address specific risk and protective factors relevant to minority families, including Latinos. The parenting program that will be investigated was created and pilot tested over the past four years through a close collaboration between OSLC and CentroLatino Americano. This collaboration was also funded through a grant from NIDA. The study will follow for two years 240 Latino families, half of whom with youth born in the U.S. and half of whom with youth born outside of the U.S.
