The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the kinds of stresses and adaptive challenges that adults and children face when confronting transitions that surround divorce. The authors start by placing the topic in a broader perspective by examining the prevalance of divorce and its related transitions, along with factors that increase the risk of marital instability. They then explore concomitant changes in family processes, relationships, and life experiences, including a consideration of the ways in which parents and children cope with their newly evolving family situations. The chapter concludes with a brief focus on postdivorce parental repartnerning, in other words, how courtship and nonmarital cohabitation affect family processes and the well-being of individual family members.
