Male and female caregivers: Are children treated differently? [Infant Daycare Education Advocacy and Support Journal].

The childcare workforce throughout the world is predominantly female. Men have equal opportunity to seek employment in childcare professions but seldom chose to do so. This gender discrepancy may result from lower pay and poorer working conditions associated with positions in childcare or from personal and cultural values about gender-appropriate work environments. Children in childcare, therefore, spend the majority of their day interacting with and being responded to by female caregivers and spend less time interacting with male caregivers. This article presents research on the contributions that both male and female caregivers (including parents, teachers, and other caretakers) provide for boys and girls and discusses what can be done to maximize children’s exposure to a diversity of gender role models.
