Training of marital skills: Some problems and concepts

The last decade’s work in this area consists entirely of exploratory investigations by a small number of investigators. With the rare exception of R Stuart, most researchers publish a few case studies, unsupported by data, and move on to more accessible problems. One of the difficulties seems to have been that of obtaining high quality data showing changes in behavior in EITHER the training setting or in the generalization to other settings. Because of the problems involved, most investigators have employed gross measures of self-report. The research literature reviewed suggested these measures were in adequate. Some alternative procedures were described. A general formulation was given for describing the process by which «normal» individuals may get caught up in the process of using aversive stimuli to control each other’s behavior. The process presumably escalates to the point where both members begin to avoid each other as defined by reduced rates of social interaction, sex, and recreation. Presumably, the formulation specified not only process and outcome variables for marital ineraction, but also implied means by which they might be measured. Finally, the reviewed material suggested a surprising degree of homogeneity in treatment approaches. However, in view of the paucity of evaluative data, there is no basis for deciding whether this implies a «good» or a «bad» state of affairs.
