Mothers in transition: Model-based strategies for effective parenting

This chapter discusses some model-based strategies for effective parenting for mothers undergoing transition. The central aim of this chapter is to provide a contextual model of family structure transitions and to discuss the role of preventive interventions in mitigating the effects of divorce and repartnering on short- and long-term adjustment. The authors begin with a review of existing programs designed to improve family member adjustment following divorce. This is followed by an introduction of the social interaction learning (SIL) model and an examination of its relevance in explicating behavioral change within the context of household reconstitution. A conceptual model of the dynamic cycle of family member transitions and its implications for family outcomes is then presented, followed by a discussion of prevention and intervention strategies for divorced families using the SIL model and related empirical findings. Last, cultural and ethnic considerations, ongoing efforts to implement these interventions in the community, and future directions for research are discussed.
