Description

OSLC is a private non-profit 501(c)3 corporation that conducts public health research in the public interest. OSLC is well known in the scientific community at both the national and the international level for research on the development, treatment, and prevention of aggression, antisocial behavior, and delinquency in children, and for evidence-based parent management training programs..

Mission

We are a collaborative, multidisciplinary center dedicated to increasing the scientific understanding of social and psychological processes related to healthy development and family functioning. We apply that understanding to the design and evaluation of interventions that strengthen children, adolescents, families, and communities.

History

The research group that founded OSLC was established by clinical psychologist Gerald R. Patterson in the late 1950’s when he worked as a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Oregon. In the mid-1960’s, Patterson left the University of Oregon and moved the group to the new and growing independent non-profit Oregon Research Institute (ORI). Patterson’s research group eventually grew to include clinical psychologist John B. Reid, therapists Marion Forgatch and Patti Chamberlain, administrator Mary Perry, and several other researchers and clinicians.

During these early years, the research group developed and refined the theoretical foundation and techniques for a version of parent management training (PMT), a cognitive-behavioral intervention strategy that has been quite influential in the fields of clinical psychology and prevention science. The original ORI closed in 1977, and OSLC was one of several research groups from ORI to open new, independent non-profit research centers. One of these groups eventually established a new center that was once again named “ORI”.

OSLC grew significantly in the 1980’s with the funding of the Oregon Youth Study (Gerald R. Patterson, Principal Investigator), and then again in the 1990’s with the funding of the Prevention Intervention Research Center (John B. Reid, Principal Investigator). Currently, OSLC and the “second generation” ORI are now the two largest independent non-profit behavioral research centers in Eugene.

Membership Corporation

OSLC is a membership corporation. Any staff member working half-time or greater may choose to become a member of the corporation. The membership elects the Board of Directors, approves the bylaws of the corporation, and participates in other organizational decision making through a representative committee called Staff Representatives Committee in Service.

Board of Directors

OSLC is governed by an elected Board of Directors comprising ten members. The majority of the members of the Board are community members who are independent of OSLC. Currently, community members include five professors from Oregon universities (University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and Oregon Health Sciences University), an attorney, and two educators. In addition, research scientists are represented by one elected scientist member, and staff by one elected non-scientist member. The Board has the responsibility to ensure that OSLC conducts business within the laws and regulations relevant to Oregon nonprofits and Federal grant recipients and sets policies based on sound business practices.

Management Structure

The management structure of OSLC is collegial. The 13 Research Scientists are members of the Scientist Council, which is charged with guiding operational decisions based on current Board-approved policies and recommending new policies to the Board of Directors. Individual Research Scientists independently pursue their lines of research and are responsible for the conduct of their research projects. The Senior Administrator is the lead administrative staff person and is supervised jointly by the Board of Directors and the Scientists Council.
